Birthday cake - Baillie Vickers

VERSE:
When i was younger, i thought i knew everything
but i would sit in class and hear what you had to say
I could stare at you for hours and not tire of anything
i would look at your face and your close and see the colors you had on today

CHORUS:
Your just as sweet as the icing on the cake
Just as fun to watch a child think they can bake
Just as friendly as they can be i guess you must have taught me something
Your smile is chocolate so soft and comforting
Your laughs vanilla so subtle and delicate
So intense so sweet so strong
I wish the party werent over

VERSE:
I never realized hoe much you influenced me
Bu its not cool to be friends with a teacher
And i jsut ignored you when you walked on by
And every day i wake up
And wonder what it would be like to apologize face to face

CHORUS:
Your just as sweet as the icing on the cake
Just as fun to watch a child think they can bake
Just as friendly as they can be i guess you must have taught me something
Your smile is chocolate so soft and comforting
Your laughs vanilla so subtle and delicate
So intense so sweet so strong
I wish the party werent over

BRIDGE:
I wish the cake wasnt gone
And i can not stand the guilt
i cant erase the memories
and now your gone forever
and i can not take it all back now
why didnt i just say hello
tell you my metaphor...

CHORUS:
Your just as sweet as the icing on the cake
Just as fun to watch a child think they can bake
Just as friendly as they can be i guess you must have taught me something
Your smile is chocolate so soft and comforting
Your laughs vanilla so subtle and delicate
So intense so sweet so strong
I wish the party werent over

Response
1. What do you think caused the accident?
-  I think Ken was watching Peggy to make sure she was okay and went off the road or crashed into another car.

2.What is Peggy's sense of her relationship with Ken before the accident? Does it change after the accident?
- Peggy says she wouldn't expect to date a guy like Ken and everyone is surprised that their relationship even became serious.

3. Does Ken show Peggy that he feels any sense of responsabiliy to her after the accident?
- Yes. I think that after the accident when he is sitting in the waiting room he feels responsible because he stays there craddling his head in his hands, and does not leave.

4.  Does this story have a good ending?
- I think it does. I had to read it a couple times but the use of figurative language was really strong and i actually felt as if i was in her shoes.

Symbol

A man may create a computer that will hold the knowledge to know what humans do before we do it.

Response
1. Would you like to live in a society where there was such a computer as Multivac?
- Yes and no. I find Multivac kind of intrusive of privacy and im no sure i would want a computer knowing everything i do and think. But in a way i think Multivac could be a good thing for knowing when bad things are gonig to happen so you can privent them. The only problem with this is that sometimes humans think bad thought but dont end up donig anything about it so if the government comes and arrests you for thinking about doing something bad you could get into all kind of dilemas.

2.  What do you believe the world or 2100 will be like?
- I believe that in 90 years time anything could happen. I mean people just like us were thinking the same thing 90 years ago. Inventions such as the television and the telephone may not be that big of a deal but back then people didnt think it would ever happen.

3. Why do Ali Othman and Rafe Leemy wait to tell Burnard Gulliman the whole truth? Are their actions believeable considering the seriousness of the crime?
- They do not tell Burnard because they are hoping that the chances will lessen and if they dont they say they will tell Burnard once the crime becomes more serious. I think that what they did wasn't the right way to handle the situation. I ,personally, would have told Brnard what was happening but told him not to make any actions until the problem becomes severe.

4. What does the ending tell you about the ability of technology to bring about a perfect world?
- In the end, a perfect world will never be acheived. Technology, no matter how powerful, will never, in the near future, be able to beat evil and crime.

Critisism

1. Why do you think the author wrote the text?
- I think he wrote the text because he wanted to let the readers know what a world run by technology wolud be like.

2. What does the author want you to think?
- I think he wanted us to think about how technology will afect the world before we decide to let it run our communities.

3. Do you belong to any of the groups in the text?
- no, because i do not plan on being a scientist, nor am i going to be arrested for no reason.

4. Does the story remind you of a real life event?
- i think in some ways Facebook is like multivac. we upload our personal information and update our every thought of what we have done and what we are gonig to do.

5. Does the story remind you of another book or movie on a similar topic?
-  i personally have never read or heard of a story similar to this one.

6. How does the story help you think about social ssues and social justice?
- It makes me think of how technology is taking over our everyday lives. Most of us are becomeing so attached to our phones, computers and t.v's that we are becoming less and less sociable.

7. What action might you take from what you have learned?
- Im not to sure if there is any particular action i will take from this text. It hasn't really left me with any deep in demonds i find in myself.

8. What big question has this text left you with?
- Will this happen in the near future? In my lifetime

Symbol

In a world of darkness and evil, a rose remains pure.

Response
1.) What do you think the story is saying about crime and criminals? Do you agree?
- I think the story is saying that the people you might think they are doing the right thing but in case are really starting the crime in their society. And i agree. Some people hate crime and wish they could get rid of it but the smallest things like bullying or gossiping can start the crimes that people commit.

2.) Do you think that we will be able to create a society that s crime free?
- No. There are only  few ways to get rid of crime and one of the major factors is having everyone involved. No matter how hard we try it only takes one person to get angry enough to start a fight.

3.)What is Miss Strangeworth trying to accomplish by sending her letters?
- I feel as if she is trying to get out her gossip without directly causing problems associated with herself. She sends the letters in confidence so the gossip line wont come back to the person who is causing it. she wants people to think about the bad things she sees and hear but she doesn't want anyone talking about her as "evil".
Critisism
1. Why do you think the author wrote the text?
- I think the author wrote the text to tell us how the smallest things we do can start major conflict in life. And how we may be what we hate so much.

2. What does the author want you to think?
- The author wants us to think about the evil she sees in her town.

3. Do you belong to any of the groups in the text?
- Yes, I think sometimes he things i talk about as wrong, are the things i do without thinknig about it. Simple things like calling someone a name or gossiping.

4. Does the story remind you of a real life event?
- Not exactly the way it is told in the story, but once i heard a rumour about some other girl and i chose to believe it and not thinknig i started talking to other people about it and spread it by accident. Later on that person i was talknig about figured out i had been talknig about her and started a rumour about me.

5. Does the story remind you of another book or movie on a similar topic?
- I have read so many books and watched so many movies that i can't think of one particular movie or book that reminds me of this story.

6. How does the story help you think about social issues and social justice?
- This makes me think about what i do that might have been considered "Evil".

7. What action might you take from what you have learned?
- I think now that i have read this story i watch what i say and do more than i used to.

8. What big question has this text left you with?
- Do I do some of the things i hate most about other people?

4 White Walls.

My mother is a plain white room, I find safety in the comfort of these 4 walls. Nothing can harm me. There are no doors in this room but there is one window. The window is 18' x 20'. It gazes out onto a field of rolling hills and flowers. Im stuck in this room with nothing but a couch, wood and a fireplace. This room is warm 90% of the time, but the days I run out of wood are cold. I sit in this room, on the comfy couch, staring out the window, wishing I was running free in the field of grass. But there are bars on the window.

Symbol

In a world of equality, no one is special.

Response
1. a) What is the purpose of handicapping in sports?
- They use handicapping to stop the higher level athletes from being better than eveyone else.
b) What sports use handicapping?
- all of them use handicapping.
c) Why has handicapping become law in Bergeron's community?
- It is a law because they are trying to make everyone equal.
d) Has the society improved as a result?
-  Im sure in one way society would have improved because no one is better than anyone else, there for no reason to fight about who is better. But if everyone is equal, how do you have romodels? Celebrities? Would life be boring? In this book it seems as though the people are being controlled by the government, they cant even think for themselves.

2.) What parts of the story are most exaggerated? What do you think was the authors purpose in using exaggeration so extensively?
- The author exaggerates the art when Harrison Bergeron takes off his handicap and commandeers the presidents office and tells the world that he will change everything and rule the world. I think he exaggerated it because he wanted to show how out of hand the world would get if the government handicapped people.

3.) What do George's and Hazel's reactions at the end of the story reveal  abut the quality of life in their society?
- It shows how the government is controlling he minds of the people in their society.

4. a) What what is the situational irony in this story? What would you expect a society where everyone is equal to be like?
-  I would expect that in a society where everyone is equal, no one would have anything to fight over. I think the irony in the story is that society isn't more peaceful.
b) What point do you think the author is making through the irony?
- i think the author is trying to make a point by saying that having people that are greater or lesser than everyone else makes for controversy and evens everything out.

Critisism
1. Why do you think the author wrote the text?
- I think he wants to show the readers what the world would be like if we were all the same, if no one was different, and if no one was special.

2. What does the author want you to think?
- He wants us to think about what life would be like. Life would be boring, and eventually people would figure out that they weren't thinking for themselves and tunr on eachother.
3. Do you belong to any of the groups in the text?
- Yes, I think that some people may say they would handicap me for my voice.

4. Does the story remind you of a real life event?
- No. The technology has not been invented yet to physically handicap a person without physically hurting them.
5. Does  the story remind you of another book or movie on a similar topic?
- This book reminds me of "The Incredibles". In this movie one of the characters , Dash, wants to try out for the track team but becasue his power is the power of speed, his mother restricts him from it. In the end of the movie his mum finally decides to let him try out but when he is racing against the other children, his parents are telling him not to win because he could do it easily.
6. How does the story help you think about social issues and social justice?
- People should be able to think however they want o think, and if you are talented you should be bale to flaunt your talent instead of being told it is not okay to be special.

7. What action might you take from what you have lerned?
- I have learnt that it is okay to be talented, and to use my talent to its full extent, and not be embaressed to except peoples compliments, because it is a gift.

8. What big question has this text left you with?
- Do some people pretend not to be good at things so they dont get special attention? Is the government working on the technology to handicap people?
